REMOVING BARRIERS

TO EMPLOYMENT

The Downtown Ambassador program started in Schenectady in 2009. City Mission partnered with Proctors to offer a hospitality service to visitors coming downtown to enjoy a show. The role of an Ambassador is to welcome people and provide help in crossing
the street, directions, parking, and restaurant recommendations. Most importantly, they smile,
laugh and make visitors feel welcome and safe
coming into the city.

Schenectady Ambassadors are happy to provide visitors with a friendly welcome and expert knowledge about downtown Schenectady. Providing employment for individuals who were once homeless and unstable, the Schenectady Ambassadors gain valuable work experience on their journey toward sustainability. As they build workplace skills, the Ambassadors offer unique presence of hospitality and expertise, the downtown businesses are supported and the community is strengthened.

What Are Others Saying?

"I’ve learned a lot about myself and what I am capable of. I have learned how to speak to people, how to carry myself, how to dress, how to talk, how to use language, how to approach different people and situations.”

"I do have a purpose, and it's great to see that even out of my mess that I was able to take it and turn it into a message for Schenectady that everybody's worth it."

“Ambassadors add a depth of knowledge that is really hard to replicate, and they approach it with a level of enthusiasm that makes us all proud that they are out there representing the city”

Mayor McCarthy, Schenectady, New York

“Now they can look up to me and seeing their dad is working and doing the right thing, so it’s important."
